The five short films nominated for the <strong>Goya Awards for Best Fiction Short Film<\/strong> were <strong><em>Australia<\/em><\/strong>, by Lino Escalera, <em><strong>Baraka<\/strong>, by <\/em>N\u00e9stor Ruiz Medina, <strong><em>Como yo te amo<\/em><\/strong>, by Fernando Garc\u00eda-Ruiz, <em><strong>Extra\u00f1os en la carretera<\/strong>,<\/em> by Carlos Solano and <strong><em>Madre<\/em><\/strong>, by Rodrigo Sorogoyen. <\/p>\n<p>I am very pleased as we are distributing <em>Australia<\/em> and <em>Madre<\/em>, and also <strong><em>Primavera Rosa en M\u00e9xico<\/em><\/strong>, by Mario de la Torre, <strong>nominated for Best Documentary Short Film<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If we analyze it carefully, in recent years the importance and impact of the <strong>Goya Awards for Best Fiction Short Film<\/strong> has changed significantly and unfortunately has lost much of the value it had years ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It has gone from being a guarantee for making a feature film debut, to a mere recognition<\/strong>, which does not even make you an academy member, and it seems it does not help much in getting producers to call you to start working on your first film.<\/p>\n<p>If we observe the <strong>history of the Goya Awards in this category<\/strong>, and analyze the last three decades we discover a change in trend, which should make us think.<\/p>\n<p>It begins in the nineties, where all the directors who won for a short film managed to shoot their first feature, and continues to the present day, where it is increasingly difficult.<\/p>\n<p>There are three milestones that mark this evolution and which curiously coincide with the beginning of each decade, these are the Goyas won by these three short films:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1990 &#8211; <em>El reino de V\u00edctor<\/em>, by Juanma Bajo Ulloa.<\/li>\n<li>2000 &#8211; <em>Siete caf\u00e9s por semana<\/em>, by Juana Mac\u00edas.<\/li>\n<li>2010 &#8211; <em>Di me que yo<\/em>, by Mateo Gil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this post I analyze the Goyas won by each director, and their subsequent evolution toward the realization of their respective feature film debuts. It is structured by decades: the nineties, the 2000s and the current decade. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Nineties (<\/strong><strong>1990-1999) <\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p>Let us begin with the <strong>nineties<\/strong>, one of the best decades Spanish cinema has produced. It is also the decade when <strong>short film production began to improve<\/strong>, and where the foundations were laid for the high quality in production we have had in recent years. <\/p>\n<p>The beginning of the decade is marked by the <strong>Goya Award for short film in 1990 to <em>El reino de Victor<\/em>, by Juanma Bajo Ulloa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Below, I list the directors who won a Goya Award for Best Fiction Short Film, and the years they needed to shoot their feature film debut:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Juanma Bajo Ulloa, <\/strong> <em>El reino de Victor<\/em> (1990), <strong>2 years<\/strong> later wins the Goya for his feature film debut, <em>Alas de mariposa<\/em> (1992).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alvaro Fernandez Armero, <\/strong><em>El columpio<\/em> (1993), <strong>2 years<\/strong> later is nominated for <em>Todo es mentira<\/em> (1995).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Santiago Segura, <\/strong> <em>Perturbado<\/em> (1994), <strong>5 years<\/strong> later wins the Goya for best feature film debut with <em>Torrente, el brazo tonto de la ley<\/em> (1999).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Javier Fesser, <\/strong><em>Aquel ritmillo<\/em> (1995), <strong>4 years<\/strong> later is nominated for <em>El milagro de P. Tinto<\/em> (1999).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Miguel Bardem, <\/strong> <em>La madre<\/em> (1996), <strong>4 years <\/strong>later nominated for <em>La mujer m\u00e1s fea del mundo<\/em> (2000).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Achero Ma\u00f1as<\/strong>, <em>Cazadores<\/em> (1998), <strong>3 years <\/strong>later wins the Goya for <em>El bola<\/em> (2001).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In total there are 6 directors who, after winning the Goya for short film, return with their feature film debut a few years later.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the directors who won a Goya for a Fiction Short Film in these years, also managed to shoot their feature film debut with an average of 4 years, although they were no longer nominated:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Gracia Querejeta<\/strong>, won the Goya for Best Short Film for <em>El viaje del agua<\/em> (1991), <strong>4 years<\/strong> later directs <em>Una estaci\u00f3n de paso<\/em> (1995), which is not nominated for best feature film debut.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jesus R. Delgado, <\/strong><em>La viuda negra<\/em> (1992), <strong>4 years<\/strong> later directs <em>La vida de tus sue\u00f1os<\/em> (1996).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roberto L\u00e1zaro, <\/strong><em> La viga<\/em> (1997), <strong>4 years <\/strong>later directs <em>La leyenda de fuego<\/em> (2001).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jacopo Rispa<\/strong>, <em>Un d\u00eda perfecto<\/em> (1999), <strong>4 years<\/strong> later directs <em>No debes estar ah\u00ed<\/em> (2003)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This trend, which begins in 1990, whereby if a director won a Goya with a short film they made their feature film debut in a few years, changes abruptly with the turn of the century.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The 2000s (2000<\/strong><strong>-2009) <\/strong> <\/h2>\n<p>In 2000 Juana Mac\u00edas wins the <strong>Goya Award for Best Fiction Short Film<\/strong> for <em>Siete caf\u00e9s por semana<\/em>. Juana took 11 years to make her first film as director, <em>Planes para ma\u00f1ana<\/em>, which was nominated in 2011 for Best Feature Film Debut. <\/p>\n<p>These are the directors who won a Goya for best short film during this decade:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Juana Macias<\/strong>, <em>Siete caf\u00e9s por semana<\/em> (2000), 11 years later is nominated for <em>Planes para ma\u00f1ana<\/em> (2011).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ana Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>, <em>Pantalones<\/em> (2001), has not yet shot a fiction feature film, only documentary features for TVE.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gustavo Salmer\u00f3n<\/strong>, <em>Desali\u00f1ada<\/em> (2002), does not direct <em>La matanza<\/em>, his first documentary feature, until 2011. This year 2017, he premiered his second documentary feature, <em>Muchos hijos, un mono y un castillo,<\/em> nominated for the 2018 Goya Awards. He has not yet shot his first fiction feature film.  <\/li>\n<li><strong>Rafa Russo<\/strong>, <em>Nada que perder<\/em> (2003), after 4 years directs his feature film debut, <em>Amor en defensa propia<\/em>, which is not nominated for the Goya.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Daniel Guzm\u00e1n<\/strong>, <em>Sue\u00f1os<\/em> (2004), 12 years later wins the Goya Award for his feature film debut, <em>A cambio de nada<\/em> (2016).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alberto Ruiz Rojo<\/strong>, <em>Diez minutos<\/em> (2005), has not yet made his feature film debut.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jos\u00e9 Javier Rodr\u00edguez Melc\u00f3n<\/strong>, <em>Nana<\/em> (2006), has not yet made his feature film debut.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Salvador G\u00f3mez Cuenca, <\/strong><em> A ciegas<\/em> (2007), has not yet made his feature film debut.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Abdelatif Hwidar, <\/strong><em>Salvador (Historia de un milagro cotidiano)<\/em> (2008), 4 years later makes his first documentary feature, <em>Kanimambo<\/em>, together with Carla Subirana and Ad\u00e1n Aliaga. He has not yet made his fiction feature film debut. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Isabel de Ocampo, <\/strong><em>Miente<\/em> (2009), 4 years later is nominated for Best Feature Film Debut for <em>Evelyn<\/em> (2013).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In this decade the change after <em>Siete caf\u00e9s por semana<\/em> is radical, <strong>of the 10 directors who won a Goya Award for Best Fiction Short Film, only Rafa Russo and Isabel de Ocampo shoot their feature film debut within 4 years<\/strong>, and only Isabel was nominated for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel Guzm\u00e1n<\/strong> is the only one in this decade who wins a Goya with his feature film debut, after having won it with a short film. This is an exception, when a few years earlier it was the norm. Daniel needs no less than 12 years to achieve it.  <\/p>\n<p>Half of the directors awarded a Goya in this decade have not yet made their first fiction feature film.<\/p>\n<p>In these years <strong>there are nominated directors who manage to make their feature film debut<\/strong>. Among them we find <strong>Borja Cobeaga<\/strong>, who in 2002 is nominated for <em>La primera vez<\/em>, and in 2007 is nominated for the Oscar for <em>Eramos pocos<\/em>, which did not receive a Goya nomination. His feature film debut, <em>Pagafantas<\/em> is nominated for the Goyas in 2010, 8 years later.  <\/p>\n<p>We must also mention the case of <strong>Daniel S\u00e1nchez Ar\u00e9valo<\/strong>, who in 2004 is nominated for <em>Express<\/em>, subsequently makes two more short films, <em>F\u00edsica II<\/em> and <em>La culpa del alpinista<\/em>. In 2007 he receives a nomination for his feature film debut, <em>Azuloscurocasinegro<\/em>, just 3 years after the nomination for Best Fiction Short Film. <\/p>\n<h2><strong>Current Decade (2010-2018)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>In 2010 Mateo Gil wins the Goya Award for Best Fiction Short Film for <em>Di me que yo<\/em><\/strong> (which we also distribute within the Madrid en corto program). This short film is made 10 years after <em>Nadie conoce a Nadie<\/em>, which is nominated for Best Feature Film Debut in 2000. <\/p>\n<p>It is the first time that the Goyas reverse the trend, and award a short film after its director has made his feature film debut.<\/p>\n<p>These are the directors who win a Goya with their fiction short film:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Mateo Gil<\/strong>, <em>Di me que yo<\/em> (2010), <strong>10 years earlier<\/strong> is nominated for <em>Nadie conoce a Nadie<\/em> (2000).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Maria Reyes<\/strong>, <em>Una caja de botones<\/em> (2011), has not yet made her feature film debut.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fernando Trullols<\/strong>, <em>El barco pirata<\/em> (2012), has not yet made his feature film debut.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Esteban Crespo<\/strong>, <em>Aquel no era yo<\/em> (2013) (he was already nominated in 2009 with <em>Lala<\/em>), <strong>5 years later<\/strong> directs his feature film debut <em>Amar<\/em> (2017).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gaizka Urresti<\/strong>, <em>Abstenerse agencias<\/em> (2014), makes his feature film debut, <em>Bendita Calamidad<\/em> in 2015, one year after his nomination.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Patricia Font<\/strong>, <em>Caf\u00e9 para llevar<\/em> (2015), is now shooting her feature film debut, which is scheduled for release in 2018, so she will be eligible for the 2019 Goya Awards, <strong>5 years later<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jos\u00e9 Luis Montesinos<\/strong>, <em>El corredor<\/em> (2016), has not yet shot his feature film debut (although it is in pre-production).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Juanjo Gim\u00e9nez<\/strong>, <em>Timecode<\/em> (2017). Directs his first short film in 1995, <em>Especial (con luz) <\/em>and in 2010 directs his first documentary feature <em>Esquivar y pegar,<\/em> <strong>6 years earlier<\/strong>. <em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In this decade only <strong>Esteban Crespo<\/strong> and <strong>Gaizka Urresti<\/strong> have managed to shoot their feature film debut. In Esteban&#8217;s case he needed an Oscar nomination and Gaizka has an important career as a short film director. <strong>Patricia Font<\/strong> will have hers next year, and <strong>Juanjo Gimenez<\/strong> and <strong>Mateo Gil<\/strong> had already made theirs previously. There are three directors who have not managed to make their feature film debut in this decade.  <\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Has Happened in the New Century?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After this analysis I have more questions than answers and I believe it invites reflection <strong>What has happened in Spanish cinema, and in the Goya Awards, for what previously seemed to be a norm to have become an exception?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What happened between the late 90s and early 2000s for such an abrupt change?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why does winning a Goya seem to no longer help you make your feature film debut?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This very morning the nominations for the 2018 Goya Awards were announced.
