{"id":11542,"date":"2016-06-27T11:55:01","date_gmt":"2016-06-27T09:55:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ismaelmartin.com\/national-festival-strategy-for-the-2018-goya-awards\/"},"modified":"2016-06-27T11:55:01","modified_gmt":"2016-06-27T09:55:01","slug":"national-festival-strategy-for-the-2018-goya-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ismaelmartin.com\/en\/national-festival-strategy-for-the-2018-goya-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"National festival strategy for the 2018 Goya Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A week after the publication of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/ismaelmartin.com\/2016\/06\/17\/aciertos-errores-las-nuevas-bases-los-premios-goya-cortometraje\/\">Goya Awards rules<\/a>, and following the <a href=\"https:\/\/ismaelmartin.com\/2016\/06\/20\/estrategia-de-festivales-de-estreno-nacional-en-la-distribucion-de-cortometrajes\/\">post on the national premiere strategy<\/a> that I published last Monday, I have been reviewing the impact of the new rules on the national festival strategy for a fiction short film. This is particularly relevant if you have a short film selected for <strong>Seminci<\/strong> or <strong>Gij\u00f3n<\/strong> that would require us to apply for the rating license and nationality certificate this year, with the <strong>2018 Goya Awards<\/strong> already in mind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This has been <strong>one of the successes and positive changes<\/strong> <strong>of the new rules<\/strong>; previously, it was mandatory to win an award at a national festival on the list, but now, in addition to awards, I can <strong>achieve up to 6 festival selections<\/strong> from that same list.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this post, we are going to look at the <strong>strategy for a Spanish short film<\/strong> based on some prior premises:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>That it is <strong>selected for the Official Section of Gij\u00f3n<\/strong> and does not win an award (an award automatically pre-selects the film).<\/li>\n<li>That it is fiction.<\/li>\n<li>That it is not a comedy.<\/li>\n<li>That it is not subsidized by the Community of Madrid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Initial considerations<\/strong> to keep in mind for our strategy:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>I must have the rating license and nationality certificate before the festival takes place; it is advisable to request them only once the selection has been communicated.<\/li>\n<li>Under the current rules, the nationality certificate must be dated between January 1, 2015, and September 30, 2016. We can assume that for the <strong>2018 Goya Awards<\/strong>, the date range will be from <strong>January 1, 2016, to September 30, 2017<\/strong>. Therefore, if I had to request the rating prior to the <strong>Gij\u00f3n Festival<\/strong>, which is held in November, <strong>I have until September 30, 2017<\/strong> (which is also the registration deadline) to achieve the festival selections I need to qualify for the 2018 Goya Awards. <\/li>\n<li>I need to <strong>achieve 5 more selections<\/strong> (I already have 1 of the 6 required); due to the dates, most festivals that are for premieres and held in October and November no longer count.<\/li>\n<li>Keep in mind that we are working on <strong>the national strategy.<\/strong> At an <strong>international level<\/strong>, there is a very extensive list where being selected for just one of them is sufficient.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Let&#8217;s look at the calendar<\/strong> <strong>with the festivals I can opt for and those that fall outside this strategy<\/strong>. The festivals following Gij\u00f3n, where we could participate without issues, would be (list sorted by date of celebration): <\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>MECAL Barcelona International Short and Animation Film Festival (March)<\/li>\n<li>Medina del Campo Film Week (March)<\/li>\n<li>M\u00e1laga Festival. Spanish Cinema (April) <\/li>\n<li>Lanzarote Film Festival &#8211; FICL (April)<\/li>\n<li>Latin American Film Festival of Catalonia (April)<\/li>\n<li>Sant Joan d&#8217;Alacant Film Festival (May)<\/li>\n<li>Torrelavega Short Film Festival FICT (May)<\/li>\n<li>Huesca International Film Festival (June)<\/li>\n<li>Alicante Film Festival (June)<\/li>\n<li>Valencia International Film Festival &#8211; Cinema Jove (June)<\/li>\n<li>Elche International Independent Film Festival (July)<\/li>\n<li>Iberian Film Festival of Badajoz (July)<\/li>\n<li>L&#8217;Alf\u00e0s del Pi Film Festival (August)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In total, we have about 13 festivals where we must achieve 5 selections<\/strong>; it is very possible to achieve this, but we must be very attentive so that none of them slip away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>There are three festivals on the list that, despite being held after Gij\u00f3n, would be excluded<\/strong>, as at the time of registration we would not yet know if we have been selected for Gij\u00f3n:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Vitoria-Gasteiz Short Film Festival. CORTADA (December, but the registration deadline is in September) <\/li>\n<li>\u201cAlmer\u00eda en Corto\u201d International Short Film Festival (December, registration deadline in September)<\/li>\n<li>Aguilar de<br \/>\n Campoo International Short Film Festival (December, registration deadline in September)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The rest of the festivals that <strong>fall outside our strategy<\/strong> due to their celebration dates are:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Cortocircuito. International Film Festival (October) <\/li>\n<li>Madrid Film Festival. PNR (October) <\/li>\n<li>Guadalajara Film Festival &#8211; Fescigu (October)<\/li>\n<li>Sitges &#8211; International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia (October) <\/li>\n<li>Octubre Corto. Arnedo Film Festival in La Rioja (October) <\/li>\n<li>Guadalajara Solidarity Film Festival. FESCIGU (October) <\/li>\n<li>Seminci. Valladolid International Film Week (October) <\/li>\n<li>Soria City International Short Film Festival (November)<\/li>\n<li>Alcine (November)<\/li>\n<li>Zaragoza Film Festival (November)<\/li>\n<li>Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival (November)<\/li>\n<li>Barcelona Independent Film Festival.
