An event organised by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amaudiovisual.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AMA<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.madrid.org\/cs\/Satellite?c=CM_Agrupador_FP&#038;cid=1354502580876&#038;idConsejeria=1109266187224&#038;idListConsj=1109265444710&#038;idOrganismo=1354502580876&#038;language=es&#038;pagename=ComunidadMadrid%2FEstructura\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Community of Madrid<\/a>, dedicated to promoting international co-productions for Madrid-based projects. <\/p>\n<p>The guests on the panel were <strong>Paz L\u00e1zaro<\/strong>, programmer, <em>programme manager<\/em> for the Panorama section and delegate for Spain and Portugal at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berlinale.de\/en\/HomePage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Berlinale<\/a>; <strong>Iv\u00e1n Trujillo<\/strong>, general director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ficg.mx\/32\/index.php\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guadalajara International Film Festival<\/a>; <strong>Dorina Oarga<\/strong>, head of industry at the <a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.ro\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Transilvania International Film Festival<\/a>; and <strong>Luis Mariano Gonzalez<\/strong>, director of <a href=\"http:\/\/alcine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alcine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A number of very interesting topics were discussed on the panel, many of which can help us design our <strong>festival strategy<\/strong>. Here are some notes and key points that were covered: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the <strong>Berlin<\/strong>, <strong>Guadalajara<\/strong> and <strong>Transilvania<\/strong> festivals there are industry sections that are very interesting. It is worth keeping them in mind when looking for co-productions and financing for our project:\n<ul>\n<li>In the case of <strong>Berlin<\/strong>, there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efm-berlinale.de\/en\/copro-market\/coproduction-market.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">co-production market<\/a> that had 550 producers attending in its latest edition. The call opens in November and Paz encouraged Spanish producers to apply. One of the most challenging requirements for Spanish projects is having a minimum budget of one million euros. Spain is included among the exceptions, allowing projects with budgets of up to \u20ac750,000 to be submitted. Screenplays must be finished.    <\/li>\n<li>In <strong>Guadalajara<\/strong>, the most important Ibero-American film market in the world takes place, as well as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.industriaguadalajara.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">co-production meeting<\/a> whose call is open now and closes on 5 December. The minimum length for projects is 70 minutes and the screenplay must also be finished. <\/li>\n<li>In <strong>Transilvania<\/strong> they have a <a href=\"http:\/\/tiff.ro\/en\/transilvania-pitch-stop\/regulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forum for projects<\/a> in development, but only for Romanians and dedicated to the director\u2019s first or second film.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ismaelmartin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/berlinnale.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2441\" src=\"https:\/\/ismaelmartin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/berlinnale-e1474197730155.png\" alt=\"berlinnale\" width=\"497\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ismaelmartin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/berlinnale-e1474197730155.png 762w, https:\/\/ismaelmartin.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/berlinnale-e1474197730155-300x203.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 497px) 100vw, 497px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Festivals <strong>often follow up on the films that are produced<\/strong> thanks to these forums. Although there is no direct influence, nor any special consideration in programming committees, it is interesting to know that festivals take an interest in these projects. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Paz advised <strong>starting the festival strategy before the film is finished<\/strong>. Contact the festival once you have a work-in-progress copy. In these cases, we must bear in mind that the music does need to be final. They do not accept work-in-progress copies with temp music, so you need to be careful with this detail. By contrast, at <strong>Guadalajara<\/strong>,<strong> Transilvania<\/strong>, and <strong>Alcine<\/strong> they must be completed works and final copies.    <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>programming lines<\/strong> of these festivals are based on having the best films, but each has its own requirements:\n<ul>\n<li>At <strong>Guadalajara<\/strong> they must be Ibero-American films premiering in Mexico (any co-production with an Ibero-American country is sufficient).<\/li>\n<li>In the case of <strong>Alcine<\/strong>, they have the <strong>Pantalla Cero<\/strong> section for low-budget independent Spanish films and <strong>Pantalla Abierta<\/strong> for debut films, also Spanish.<\/li>\n<li>At <strong>Transilvania<\/strong> they focus on the director\u2019s first or second works. They have a short film section dedicated to fantasy and horror shorts. <\/li>\n<li>At <strong>Berlin<\/strong> they must be world or international premieres.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Within this premieres policy, an important detail was noted:<strong> an international premiere includes those national festivals with an international section<\/strong>. For example, a Spanish film that has taken part in <strong>Seminci<\/strong>, <strong>San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/strong> or <strong>Seville<\/strong> cannot enter the selection process in <strong>Berlin,<\/strong> as these are international competitions. But if, for example, it takes part in the <a href=\"http:\/\/festivalcinesevilla.eu\/es\/el-festival\/secciones-seff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Resistencias section<\/strong> of the <strong>Seville Festival<\/strong><\/a>, dedicated to Spanish cinema, it can apply to the <strong>Berlinale<\/strong>, as it is a national competition.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>As for the <strong>value of a world premiere versus an international premiere<\/strong> in the final selection, a few details to bear in mind were highlighted:\n<ul>\n<li>Festivals aim to discover new works that have not been seen before and to offer their guests the newest titles on the world scene.<\/li>\n<li>To attract as many delegates as <strong>Berlin<\/strong> does, a high percentage of world premieres is important. If not, press delegates or American distributors, for example, find it difficult to travel to Berlin if they have already been able to see the films presented at the festival elsewhere. <\/li>\n<li>When a festival has a significant volume of films, as happens in Berlin, it is a criterion that allows films to be selected for certain awards, such as the <strong>GWFF Best First Feature Award<\/strong> for best debut feature, where only world premieres are eligible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Finally, a very valuable piece of advice from Paz: <strong>programmers talk to each other<\/strong>. Be careful about offering a film to <strong>Berlin<\/strong> as a world premiere and exclusive when it has already also been screened at <strong>San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/strong>\u2014everyone finds out. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Overall, the round table was very good.
