Documentary shorts are gaining increasing importance, and every year we are surprised by high-quality works. <\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, we recently learned of an important development. The prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idfa.nl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IDFA<\/a>, the <strong>Amsterdam Documentary Festival<\/strong>, has created a <strong>competitive section for documentary short films<\/strong>. Until now, it only had specific sections for feature films and medium-length films, although short films were included in other sections, such as student documentaries, children&#8217;s audiences, and experimental films. <\/p>\n<p>The new short film section <strong>does not require a premiere<\/strong>, although it values world, international, or European premieres, in line with other sections of the festival. The maximum duration is 40 minutes, and there is a submission fee of \u20ac40. There are two submission deadlines: May 1st for documentaries produced before April, and August 1st for more recent ones.  <\/p>\n<p>The changes in the IDFA sections also mean an increase in the competition duration for <strong>medium-length films<\/strong> and <strong>feature films<\/strong>. Now, <strong>medium-length films must have a duration of 40 to 69 minutes<\/strong>, and <strong>feature films are considered to be 70 minutes or longer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the different IDFA sections, I have considered <strong>other festivals held in the last months of 2016 and this first quarter of 2017<\/strong>, mostly featuring premiere short films or those with few screenings (with some exceptions). This analysis allows us to see the works that are standing out in the international festival circuit. I have noted the awards at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idfa.nl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IDFA<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dok-leipzig.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leipzig<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rotterdam<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/wff.pl\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Warsaw<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.docnyc.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DOC NYC<\/a> in 2016, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sundance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sundance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berlinale.de\/en\/HomePage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Berlin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigskyfilmfest.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Sky<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/tdf.filmfestival.gr\/default.aspx?lang=en-US&#038;loc=24&#038;page=1466\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thessaloniki<\/a> this year, 2017. It should be noted that the awards for the new editions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visionsdureel.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vision du R\u00e9el<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cphdox.dk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CPH:DOX<\/a> (currently taking place), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cinemadureel.org\/fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cin\u00e9ma du R\u00e9el<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fidmarseille.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FID Marseille<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.documentamadrid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DocumentaMadrid<\/a> festivals are yet to be announced. <\/p>\n<p>Here is the list of 16 documentary short films:<\/p>\n<p><strong>#1<\/strong><em><strong> Close Ties<\/strong><\/em>, by Zofia Kowalewska (Poland), has been awarded at the <strong>Leipzig<\/strong> and <strong>IDFA<\/strong> festivals, receiving the award for best student documentary. It is one of the most strongly emerging proposals in the festival circuit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#2<\/strong><em> <strong>Pulse<\/strong><\/em>, by Robin Petr\u00e9 (Hungary, Portugal, and Belgium), won the Best Short Film award in the documentary and animation short film section at <strong>Leipzig<\/strong>. Although this short film is from 2015, it participated in <strong>Vision du R\u00e9el<\/strong> in 2016 and was also awarded at <strong>DocLisboa<\/strong> in October. <\/p>\n<p><strong>#3<\/strong> <em><strong>Rocknrollers<\/strong><\/em>, by Daan Bol (Netherlands), was the Best Documentary Short Film in the children&#8217;s section of <strong>IDFA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#4<\/strong><em><strong> Naomi&#8217;s Secret Saskia Gubbels<\/strong><\/em> (Netherlands) received the Jury Award, also in the Kids&#038;Docs section in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#<em>5<\/em><\/strong><em><strong> Alone<\/strong><\/em>, by Garrett Bradley (United States), has been the Best Documentary Short Film at <strong>Sundance<\/strong>. This short can be viewed online on the <strong>New York Times<\/strong> website, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/nytimes.com\/video\/op-docs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prestigious Op-Docs section<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><strong>#<\/strong><strong>6<\/strong><em><strong> Rubber Coated Steel<\/strong><\/em>, by Lawrence Abu Hamdan (Lebanon and Germany) and <strong>#<\/strong><strong>7<\/strong><em><strong> Sakhisona<\/strong><\/em>, by Prantik Basu (India) have been awarded in the short film section at <strong>Rotterdam<\/strong>. Of the three awards this festival grants to short films in the <strong>Tiger Competition<\/strong>, two of them went to experimental documentaries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#8<em> Cidade Pequena<\/em><\/strong>, by Diogo Costa Amarante (Portugal), won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at the <strong>Berlinale<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#<\/strong><strong>9<\/strong><em><strong> Ensue\u00f1o en la Pradera<\/strong><\/em>, by Esteban Arrangoiz (Mexico), director of <em><strong>El buzo<\/strong><\/em>, which was already selected in <strong>Berlin<\/strong> last year, has won the Silver Bear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#10<\/strong><em><strong> Street of Death<\/strong><\/em> by Karam Ghossein (Lebanon and Germany), in this case, won the Audi Award also in <strong>Berlin<\/strong>, completing a list of winners dominated by documentary shorts. The main short film section in Berlin, <strong>Berlinale Shorts<\/strong>, continues its commitment to documentaries in recent years. <\/p>\n<p><strong>#11<\/strong><em><strong> Love bite: laurie lipton and her disturbing black &#038; white drawings<\/strong><\/em>, by James Scott (United Kingdom), has been the Best Documentary Short Film at the <strong>Warsaw<\/strong> <strong>Film Festival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#12<\/strong><em><strong> Bedside Manner<\/strong><\/em>, by Corinne Botz (United States) had its world premiere at the last <strong>DOC NYC<\/strong> and won the Jury Award for Best Documentary Short Film.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#13<\/strong><em><strong> The fourth kingdom<\/strong><\/em>, by the Spanish Alex Lora, Adan Aliaga (Spain, United States), had its world premiere at the <strong>Big Sky Documentary Film Festival<\/strong>, winning the main award in the MiniDoc section, for short films up to 15 minutes in length.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#14<\/strong> <em><strong>Kayayo: the living shopping baskets<\/strong><\/em>, by Mari Bakke Riis (Norway), has also won an award at <strong>Big Sky<\/strong>, in the section for short films with a duration of 15 to 40 minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#15<\/strong><em><strong> The rain will follow<\/strong><\/em>, by Eugene Richards (United States) has been awarded the Artistic Vision Award in the short film competition, also at <strong>Big Sky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#16<\/strong><em><strong> Ahmad&#8217;s hair<\/strong><\/em>, by Susan Koenen (Netherlands) won the audience award at the <strong>Thessaloniki Festival<\/strong> for documentaries up to 50 minutes in length.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that the usual requirements for documentary shorts often differ from <strong>fiction<\/strong> and <strong>animation<\/strong>. While the typical limit is 30 minutes, <strong>for documentaries it is 40 minutes<\/strong>. In any case, duration limits are less strict; many documentary film festivals accept all types of durations and have sections for short, medium-length, and feature films. <\/p>\n<p>Although it is currently difficult to see these documentaries (except for <em><strong>Alone<\/strong><\/em>), we hope they will soon be selected in other competitions, and we will have the opportunity to see them, either online or in the festival circuit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you know of any other outstanding titles this year, please feel free to leave a comment.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These days I&#8217;ve been reviewing the most prominent documentary short films so far this year.
