Last week, the Medina del Campo<\/a> and M\u00e1laga<\/a> festivals<\/strong> were presented in Madrid, taking place this March. Both are essential for discovering new short film production in our country, alongside the Sitges<\/a>, Seminci<\/a>, and Gij\u00f3n<\/a> festivals, which take place at the end of the year, and which I discussed in December’s post about new short film releases<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Medina del Campo<\/strong> runs from March 10 to 18, and M\u00e1laga<\/strong> begins on March 17 and runs until March 26. One could say that these festivals mark the beginning of the festival circuit for many short films. <\/p>\n

While in the cases of Sitges<\/strong>, Seminci<\/strong>, and Gij\u00f3n<\/strong> there is a limited number of Spanish films, as they usually compete in international sections (except at Seminci<\/strong>), it is now when a significant number of Spanish premieres appear. In the official section of Medina del Campo<\/strong> alone, 32 short films participate, and there are several sections: La otra mirada<\/em>, Castilla y Le\u00f3n<\/em>, and Fantasmedina<\/em> (in addition to an international section).<\/p>\n

It should be noted that both Medina del Campo<\/strong> and M\u00e1laga<\/strong> do not have a national premiere requirement, but their programming usually consists of many national premieres and short films that have had few festival participations. In short, they aim to showcase the most recent production of the year<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

For this reason, both festivals are essential for discovering new creations, as well as the works that are standing out, as some coincide in both selections.<\/p>\n

To analyze the programming of these two festivals, I have separated the premiere short films from those that are not, in the main sections of both festivals:<\/p>\n

              Other Festivals for Discovering New Short Films
              \n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

              In addition to these two festivals, one must consider the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Film Festival<\/a>, which does have a premiere requirement in Spain, although the short film section is international in nature and includes some national titles. The festival runs from March 31 to April 9, and so far I have not seen the short film programming released. One should also consider the Madrid Community Short Film Week<\/a>, which screens more than 30 short films that have received funding from the Community of Madrid, all of recent production and mostly premieres, taking place from April 24 to 29. <\/p>\n

              In total, I estimate that between Medina del Campo<\/strong> and M\u00e1laga<\/strong> there are 40 premiere short films<\/strong>, which can be seen for the first time, among them Madre<\/strong><\/em>, Cachorro,<\/strong><\/em> El vestido, Les vimos re\u00edr y cre\u00edmos que era de felicidad.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

              With these selections we can confirm that the creativity of our young creators is in very good health<\/strong>, the desire to make and share cinema does not wane, and each year we encounter new proposals that enrich our cinematography. We will be attentive to the journey of these shorts through the circuit and hope they have many other opportunities to participate in festivals. <\/p>\n
