A few weeks ago we learned about some of the new accredited festivals for the Short Film Academy Awards, although they were not yet updated on the official website listings. Finally, after my return from Clermont-Ferrand, I verified that they were now available and was able to update the listings.
In total I have seen that there are 9 new festivals:
- Alcine (Spain)
- Animator International Animated Film Festival (Poland)
- Animest (Romania)
- Brozelens (United States)
- Go Short (Netherlands)
- Hollyshorts (United States)
- Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival (United States)
- The Pan African Film and Arts Festival (United States)
- Regard – Sanguenay International Film Festival (Canada)
Among these festivals we have the Alcalá de Henares Festival Alcine, which increases to 5 the number of Spanish festivals accredited by the Hollywood Academy (including the Goya Award). The news is even better as it includes the Ciudad de Alcalá Award for Best National Short Film, which guarantees that we will have a Spanish short film (and not only the fiction and animation short films winning the Goya) with the option to submit to the Academy Awards.
Alcine thus becomes the first Spanish festival with an accredited national section.
Additionally, there are three other festivals specialized in short films and accredited in this new update: Regards in Canada, Go Shorts in the Netherlands, and Hollyshorts in the United States. There are also two more animation festivals, such as Animest in Romania and Animator in Poland.
Another characteristic of this new update has been the commitment to festivals for very specific population segments, such as the case of Brozelens and The Pan African Film and Arts Film Festival, both dedicated to cinema by people of color. Along these lines, Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival is focused on films with themes related to Asian Americans and inhabitants of the Pacific Ocean islands. These new festivals join the Urbanworld Festival, which was already accredited.
There are also three new festivals held in Los Angeles, raising the total number to 6 festivals in a single city and no less than 9 festivals in the state of California alone:
- AFIFEST
- Hollyshorts
- Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival
- Los Angeles Film Festival
- LA ShortFest
- Palm Springs ShortFest
- The Pan African Film Festival
- San Francisco International Film Festival
- Santa Barbara International Film Festival
