Last week, we confirmed our country’s participation for another year in the international co-production forum of the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Market, Euro Connection 2017, which I mentioned a year ago and for which we serve as national coordinators through Madrid en corto.
We now know the new dates for the selection process:
- The call for projects will open on September 1, and projects must be sent to the email ismael@madridencorto.es.
- The deadline for project submission will be October 20.
- The final deadline to announce the selected projects, after the European-level selection process, will be November 22.
The figures for this forum give us an idea of its importance in the international co-production of short films at a European level:
- In 2016, there were 168 participants from 28 countries.
- 75 one-to-one meetings were organized.
- 95% of participants rated it with a 4 (on a scale of 1 to 5).
- 100% of participants wish to return for the next edition.
- 67 short films from submitted projects have been completed, 32 of which were co-productions.
Let’s review the main requirements for a project to participate:
- Short film projects up to 40 min. of any genre (fiction, animation, and creative documentary)
- Part of the funding must be secured. In addition to the production company’s own resources, a portion of the funding must come from outside the producer (public or private aid, crowdfunding, etc.). There is no maximum limit for this contribution.
- The project cannot be filmed before May 2017.
Projects must be submitted in English, although for the first phase it is not necessary. However, if selected, the final project must be sent in English within a few days, so it is important to have it prepared in advance.
The selection process has two stages: a first stage organized by us in Spain, where registered projects are collected and a jury selects a single project from those submitted.
This project is sent to a second selection process at a European level, with another jury, which chooses the 16 final projects that will be part of the forum.
In the case of producers selected at the national level but not chosen for the forum, the Euro Connection organization invites them to attend the pitchings and offers them the opportunity to present themselves to all invited producers from each country.

The first year we participated in the forum, in 2015, Palabras de Caramelo (produced by Making Doc) took part. It was one of the most highly rated projects and recently premiered at the Madrid Community Short Film Week last April.
