The countdown for registration for the 2017 Goya Awards has already begun; there are only 18 days left until September 30, a mere three weeks. In the field of documentaries, things haven’t changed much since the post where I analyzed the shorts that could register. There are still only three short films:
- 23 de Mayo, by David Martín de los Santos
- Cabezas habladoras, by Juan Vicente Córdoba
- Sin Dios ni Santa Maria, by Samuel M. Delgado and Helena Girón
Last Friday, the Alcances Documentary Film Festival opened, which closes next Saturday, September 17. At this moment, it is the only possibility for a fourth short film. Let’s look at the options available right now.
This is the current selection of documentary shorts at Alcances:

- Asturies apuntes, by Manutrillo
- Campanya, by Catarina Brites, Andrés Alonso, Alejandro Cabrera, Lara Curto and Damián Depetris
- Eco, by Xacio Baño
- El cadáver del tiempo, by Luis E. Parés
- La mano que trina, by María Cañas
- Ojalá, by Antonio Antón
- Ojo Salvaje, by Paco Nicolás
- Sin Título, by Julio Lamaña and Ricardo Perea
- Sol mihi Semper Lucet, by Álvaro Fernández Pulpeiro
- Ur Artean, by Jesús María Palacios and Íñigo Jiménez
- Vai chover, by Santiago D. Risco
- Ventanas, by Pilar García Elegido
- Zeitübergreifend (Across Time and Space), by Begoña M. Santiago
From this list, we must rule out Ventanas (it was nominated last year), Eco (it is from last year), and 23 de mayo (it is already registered). Now let’s see in the ICAA website database which of these shorts have the rating license, which they all must have before the festival takes place.
This is the result: No short film currently has the rating license and the certificate of nationality, except for 1 short; this is Ojo salvaje, by Paco Nicolás, which would need the award to be able to register for the Goyas, as the selection alone would not be enough.
The poor situation of documentary short films is confirmed; we may find ourselves with only three registered shorts.
