Today the list of selected short films has been published again with a necessary correction from the Film Academy. More short films have been added, completing the quotas for Animation and Fiction. Documentary ultimately remains at only 8 and does not complete the quota of 10 documentaries.
The news appeared in Cortosfera magazine. On the Academy’s website, only the updated list of short films has been published.

Yesterday we learned of the short film selection for the Goya Awards and, as expected, with several surprises.
Congratulations to all those selected; among them are several short films that I distribute, so I am very pleased about that.
The selection is published on the Film Academy website and has also been published in Cortosfera magazine.

Analyzing the selection after the posts I have published on this subject, several doubts and questions arise. Especially because the participation quotas stipulated in the rules in Article 9 have not been completed:
9. Participation quotas. Preselection.
From among the short films in competition that meet all of these Rules, the Commission chosen by the Board of Directors for this purpose shall select a maximum of 15 fiction short films, a maximum of 10 animation short films and a maximum of 10 documentary short films, with any of the categories potentially having a number of short films below the stated numbers, to proceed to the first voting phase.
In this post I list the questions that arise after seeing the selection and to which I have no answer:
- Why are there 14 selected in Fiction and not 15? Are there not short films of sufficient quality to complete the list and participate in the Goya Awards?
- Why are there 8 selected in Animation? Are there not 2 more animation short films with sufficient quality?
- Why are there only 4 selected in Documentary and not 10? Why have two of the most important short films of this year been left out, such as 23 de mayo and Sin Dios ni Santa Maria? If we are objective and adhere to the festivals, 23 de mayo has achieved 5 selections in national festivals, one award and one international selection (Seattle) that qualifies for the Goya Awards, and Sin Dios ni Santa Maria 3 selections in festivals and two international ones (Ann Arbor and Vila do Conde). Both short films appeared in the post I published in June.
- So… what is the purpose of the festival filter?
- What are the Commission’s reasons for leaving out these two documentaries?
- Are the four selected documentaries already nominated?
- Who are the members of the Film Academy Commission?
- Why have the registration statistics not been published?
- Why are there no short film or documentary representatives in the Film Academy?
