At yesterday’s Goya Awards ceremony, Giovanni Macelli’s short film JUAN Y LA NUBE won the Goya Award for Best Animated Short Film, a well-deserved award for this short film, which, as part of the Madrid en corto 2014 catalog, is having a great run on the festival circuit.
After just over six months of distribution, it’s a good time to briefly review its journey. We started with the first submissions and registrations in July, after its premiere at the Madrid Community Short Film Week, and following screenings at the Filmoteca and Cineteca (as part of Notodo Weekend), both already included in the catalog.
Nationally, the first festival where it competed was the Elche Festival in July, and internationally, at the animation festivals of Animage (Brazil), Linoleum (Russia), and FIA (Uruguay), all in September. Its US premiere was none other than at the prestigious Austin Film Festival in October.

In the first few months, the short film’s growth has been spectacular, achieving about 13 selections, two of which are out of competition, in October alone.
After a typically slow January, we have no less than eight festival selections planned for February, with festivals already confirmed for March and April. In total, we have now reached 50 festivals, 43 of which are competitive, and 7 in parallel sections.
Internationally, it is being very well received, having been screened in 23 countries, with Italy leading with 4 festivals, followed by Brazil with 3, and Greece, Colombia, the United States, and India, all with 2 festivals.
The Goya Award undoubtedly comes at a good time, as it can help its festival run after these first few months and consolidate its growth.
